Brief History of the Association :
All India Science Teachers’ Association, the first of its kind in India, was formed in 1956 in Summer Hills of Shimla, HP state by the science teachers of all levels, scientists and officers associated with Science Institutes of India. The objective of the association was to lend voluntary services for the professional growth of science teachers of schools, development of science curricula related to newly introduced 11 class higher secondary education, development of teaching learning materials and evaluation system. To intensify the activities of the association regional chapters were opened in different states of our country. As a result, All India Science Teachers’ Association, West Bengal (AISTA, WB) emerged in 1976 with the patronage of all people interested in science education across WB. This year almost coincided with the year of introduction of new curriculum of science education as per 10+2+3 educational structure all over India. AISTA,WB followed the legacy of activities of its all India parent body and also introduced some activities in science directly involving the students from standard III to XII .
Progress of work:

AISTA, WB started work for the development of scientific attitude among the teachers and public.

  • Gradually it included different science activities even up to research on science education of the under privileged school students of WB.
  • It has been able to increase it no. of centres of activities up to 200 .The centres are mostly located in the districts: Kolkata, Two 24 Pgs, Two Dinajpur, Two     Midnapore, Howrah, Bankura, Purulia, Nadia, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar etc
  • AISTA,WB has acquired its own spacious building at Bhawanipur ,Kolkata(near Jadubabur Bazar/ Netaji Bhaban Metro Station)
  • Its no. of individual life members has already crossed 400 and Institutional membership crossed 30. The respective annual members have crossed 30 &10.
  • It has been able to get its registration under society registration act & introduce its website.
  • It has been also trying to increase and stabilize its financial position by collecting endowment funds and donations.
Some Essential Features AISTA, WB:
  • The Association has constitution involving different rules and objectives for guiding the members and activities of the association.
  • Science teachers of all levels, scientists, persons interested in science and, educational institutions are eligible to get membership, life or annual, at the cost of nominal fees.
  • The association does not get any financial assistance in any form from any Govt.
  • The association keeps contact with any student through his/her school of study /convener of the concerned centre.
  • The Association has a small stock of science books which the members/conveners can use.
  • The Association office remains open generally on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday from 2-30pm to 5-00pm(except on holidays/emergency)
  • Annual conference is held after the publication of results of SATST& PTEE.
  • AISTA, WB publishes bulletins of activities and an Annual Journal containing selected/invited articles on science teaching/learning/research, from science teachers and school students. It also publishes popular science books, sample question papers of yester years with necessary guidance for the tests.
Information about SATST, PTEE, Essay Tests, Quest & Extempore Talks
  • SATST, PTEE and Essay competitions are held every year in the last week of August/First week of September simultaneously in the different approved centers of AISTA, WB on a Sunday.
  • SATST is held for standards III to X, both in English and Bengali media according to the Science and Mathematics syllabi of WB Boards of Education.
  • Essay tests are held on Environmental issues/awareness.
  • Evaluated Answer sheets for SATST are sent to the centres for perusal of the candidates. Best 10 candidates of VIII & IX have to subsequently appear in an oral test at the time of annual conference.
  • Letter grades based on percentile ranks are awarded to the top 20% candidates of PTEE, SATST and Essay competitions.
  • Final round of ex tempore talks and quests are held on the dates of annual conference.
  • State level &District levels top candidates are awarded different prizes in the annual Conference of AISTA, WB. Centre- level top candidates are awarded prizes from the respective centre, later on.
